2023 Masters Odds: Bettors Support Tiger Woods; Like Sharps bet

With little time to catch our breath after March Madness, the main focus is now on the odds of winning the Masters. The annual Azalea Run starts Thursday through Sunday at Augusta National.

And while Tiger Woods is nowhere among the favorites this week, he’s still getting plenty of attention across multiple Masters odds markets.

Let’s take a tour of Masters betting, with insights from PointsBet USA and FOX betas well as a few games from an astute golf bettor.

PointsBet USA bet Woods at +8000 ($10 to win $810 total) to win his sixth Green Jacket. That means 29 golfers ahead of Woods have a chance of winning the Masters.

In other words, odds makers have little fear of a Woods win. But thanks to Masters Prop Bets, there are plenty of ways to help Woods succeed in other ways.

PointsBet has six Woods-related markets:

To make the cut (-200, bet $10 to win $15 total)
To make a hole-in-one (+4500, bet $10 to win $460 total)
Having an eagle in round 1 (+425, bet $10 for a total win of $52.50)
Lead after Round 2 (+5000, bet $10 to win $510 total)
To have a bogey-free round during the tournament (+400, wager $10 to win $50 total)
To beat Sergio Garcia straight (-121, bet $10 to win $18.26 total)

“Of the Tiger Specials, Woods was by far the most popular with his hole-in-one at +5000,” said PointsBet Media Analytics Manager Wyatt Yearout. “If you look at all Tiger Specials as a whole, the hole-in-one prop takes up 35% of all Tiger Special bets and over 50% of the money.”

In terms of ticket count, Woods Making the Cut is the most popular selection among PointsBet’s tiger props.

And Woods’ neck-and-neck race with Garcia made for interesting play on Wednesday morning. As mentioned above, Woods is a modest favorite at -121, while Garcia is at -115 (bet $10 to win $18.70 total).

“Currently, Woods has taken 100% of the bets in the market,” Yearout said.

Assist Woods to win

And of course, even with the higher odds for Tiger – and perhaps because of those longer odds representing a larger payout – customers are still supporting Woods to win the Masters. At FOX bet, Trading Operations Senior Manager Dylan Brossman said that Woods was as long as +10000 and as short as +5000 (50/1). He’s right between those numbers now +7500 improved profit.

“Surprise, surprise, Tiger Woods is our biggest commitment to win The Masters,” Brossman said before mentioning other Woods markets. “We’re pretty close on Tiger to make the cut at -250, so we haven’t garnered significant interest so far. However, we offer both Tiger and Rory McIlroy a generous boost to make the cut at +100 (bet increase).”

McIlroy is the joint favorite in FOX Bet’s odds to win the Masters, joining Scottie Scheffler at +750.

Winner and Loser

Brossman noted several players at or near the top of the odds board – odds of +3000 or less – that FOX Bet pays close attention to, both on the positive and negative side of the sportsbook ledger.

“Our biggest load in this area right now is Max Homa (+3000). We put Homa at +8000 last July and +2500 last week,” Brossman said. “The Big 3 (McIlroy, Scheffler, Jon Rahm) gobbled up much of the grip, but their relatively low prices protected us from greater liability for any of them.”

Rahm is third pick to win the Masters, just behind McIlroy and Scheffler.

“Unlike most tournaments, McIlroy would be a very favorable result for us right now,” Brossman said. “Its low price coupled with the stacked field seems to have put people off backing Rory to claim his first Masters win. Likewise, Rahm would see us positively overall. However, Scheffler would be a small loss.”

LIV and let live

LIV Tour golfers are eligible to play at the Masters and 18 members of the new tour will tee off in Augusta this week. Among those players are certainly some who could don the green jacket on Sunday night, including Brooks Koepka (+4000) and Dustin Johnson, winner of 2020 (+2800). Of course, Phil Mickelson – a three-time Masters winner – is a popular play, although he’s a +20000 Long Shot on FOX Bet (bet $10 to win $2,010 total).

“Brooks Koepka is our biggest draw outside of the LIV field at this point, closely followed by DJ and Phil,” Brossman said.

FOX Bet also has a base on whether any LIV golfer will win the Masters, with No a -909 Favorite (bet $10 to win $11.10 total) and yes a +600 Bet Boost underdogs (bet $10 to win a total of $70).

“We’re seeing a lot more interest in Yes and we’re banking on one of the 18 bringing it home,” Brossman said.

The sharp side

A perceptive Vegas golf bettor has dialed in on three players in Masters Futures odds, and two of the three are LIV Tour golfers.

“I jumped on Brooks Koepka early,” he said of his bet on Koepka at a whopping +9900. “He’s reunited with [coach] Claude Harmony III. Koepka won all four of his majors with Harmon. Koepka paused, and [now] he’s a force again.”

Also, bettor Jordan Spieth got early at +2800 and is at +3500 on Johnson.

“Spieth was built for Augusta and rounds off in form. And DJ has way too much value at 30/1 or more,” he said.

Better certainly has the best numbers on all three golfers. Spieth is now fourth choice in most sports betting in the +1800 range, while Johnson is at +2800 and Koepka is at +4000.
