We’re going to Vidanta in Vallarta, Mexico for the Mexico Open this week.
Designed by Greg Norman, the course is a par 71 course measuring 7,456 yards with paspalum greens.
Defending champion Jon Rham opened as a huge betting favorite to win the tournament. +260 on FOX Bet.
Now that we’ve started with the basics, let’s move on to the favorites and my absolute portfolio for this tournament.
Mexico Open Odds & Field
Jon Rahm +260 (Wager $10 to win $36 total)
Tony Finau +750 (Wager $10 to win $85 total)
Wyndham Clark +1800 (Wager $10 to win $190 total)
Gary Woodland +2200 (Wager $10 to win $230 total)
Nicolai Hojgaard +2800 (Wager $10 to win $290 total)
Maverick McNealy +3000 (Wager $10 to win $310 in total)
Patrick Rodgers +3000 (Wager $10 to win $310 in total)
Byeong Hun An +3300 (Wager $10 to win $340 total)
Beau Hossler +3500 (Wager $10 to win $360 in total)
Alex Noren +4000 (Wager $10 to win $410 total)
Stephan Jaeger +4000 (Wager $10 to win $410 total)
Alex Smalley +4500 (Wager $10 to win $460 total)
Emiliano Grillo +5000 (Wager $10 to win $510 in total)
Rahm is clearly the best player in this field, but I can’t justify playing him with this number. Here are a few other players and bets worth splashing a few bucks on.
“The Gimme”
Aaron Rai finishes in top 20 (+175 on FOX Bet)
Rai doesn’t fit into the chart of a big hitter, but his approach play will keep him competitive with this weaker field. He’s playing solid golf with two top 20 finishes recently. Rai also ranks sixth in Strokes Gained Off The Tee for the last 36 rounds. He was inside the top 10 after each of the first three laps here last year before retiring. I also toss him some bucks at +4500 to win it all.
“Grab It and Rip It”
Vincent Norman (+9000 on FOX Bet)
Norman is a big hitter, ranking in the top 20 in terms of driving distance. That layout will help his game, and he’s had three top-25 finishes in his last five starts. If you want to take a big swing out of the box, throw some pizza money at Norman to trip him up.
Other outrights
Gary Woodland (+2200 on FOX Bet)
Woodland’s skills are a perfect match for this course. He’s a long hitter with solid iron play. Woodland is second in Strokes Gained Ball Striking for the last 36 rounds. He will be one of the top three players in this event but that is not reflected in the odds.
Patrick Rodgers (+3000 on FOX Bet)
Rodgers has had two solid performances recently, with a fifth-place finish at the Valero Open and a T-19 at RBC Heritage. Last year he had a top 10 finish here, which makes sense as he plays his best on paspalum greens.
Emiliano Grillo (+5000 on FOX Bet)
Grillo finished 33rd here last year but comes into this event in much better shape having finished seventh at the RBC Heritage a couple of weeks ago. The metrics show that Grillo is another guy who putts well on paspalum greens.
Ben Martin (+5000 on FOX Bet)
Martin is currently playing the best golf of his pro career, making seven individual straight cuts and four top 15 finishes (three top 10 finishes) at the course. Also, he’s been gaining shots with the ball in the last 20 rounds.
