Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered no serious damage to his injured right wrist. Athletic reported on Monday.
Antetokoumpo reportedly had his wrist checked in New York on Monday, showing he may not miss a lot of time but could still miss a few games.
ESPN first reported that Antetokounmpo was going to New York, and it was later confirmed by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Antetokounmpo injured his wrist after trying to deflect a gunshot in Chicago on Thursday night. He left after only nine minutes and did not return. He had X-rays and Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said when they came back clean.
But the wrist obviously hasn’t improved much since then. Antetokounmpo didn’t join his brothers for Saturday night’s All-Star Skills Challenge in Utah as planned – he was represented there by Buck’s teammate and fellow All-Star Jrue Holiday.
And he played just 20 seconds in his team’s win over Team LeBron in Sunday night’s All-Star Game, getting a dunk on first possession, then committing a foul and going to the bench to basically coach for the rest of the night.
“Take it every day and try to get healthy,” said Antetokounmpo after the game. “You know, obviously I had the incident three days ago. I don’t think it’s wise in any way to play a lot of minutes in the All-Star game. At the end of the day, of course, you join in, pacing, joking, doing some dunks, getting some work done. But at the end of the day I think you have to be mature too.”
He gave no indication that the wrist problem is more serious than a sprain.
“Hopefully I can be available to my team if they need me,” said Antetokounmpo.
Milwaukee has the NBA’s second-best record coming off the All-Star break 41-17, a half game behind Boston in the Eastern Conference.
Antetokounmpo is third in the NBA with 31.8 points per game, behind only Dallas’ Luka Dončić (33.3) and Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid (33.1).
