From Brooks Koepka showing the world he’s back to Jon Rahm demonstrating his dominance of the field in a comeback for the ages, Masters Week did not disappoint.
We now turn our attention to Harbor Town on Hilton Head Island, SC for this week’s RBC Heritage.
While some big stars are missing – most notably Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Hideki Matsuyama – the field is littered with top talent among the 132 golfers.
Surprisingly, defending champion Jordan Spieth (+1800) is not the betting favorite this week. That honor goes to Scottie Scheffler who is currently listed at +800 on FOX Bet to win it all.
Over the past 10 years, players who competed heavily in the pressured Masters have struggled in Harbor Town. In fact, according to FOX Sports Research, six of the last 10 winners of this tournament missed the Masters Cut entirely this year. Keep this in mind as you place your bets this week.
The course, designed by Pete Dye, is a par-71 measuring 7,121 yards and features Bermuda grass greens. The course rewards accuracy over distance and takes the driver out of the game. So when putting together your betting card, look for surgeons instead of big bombers.
Now that we’ve started with the basics, let’s move on to my outcome portfolio for this tournament.
Review of Nick’s Masters
Nick Wright shares his reaction and the Masters’ biggest takeaways.
Colin Morikawa +1800 um FOX bet
While Morikawa finished T10 at the Masters, it wasn’t the start to the season he was hoping for. A win here would change that abruptly. And if there is a course tailored to Morikawa’s game, this is it.
As mentioned above, this week is all about precision and iron play, where the 26-year-old thrives. One of the key metrics for success here is Strokes Gained: Approach, and Morikawa takes second place in that category.
With a T7 in 2021, he’s also 3-for-3 on the cuts being made at Harbor Town.
Cam Young +2000 um FOX bet
Young hits the ball well and calmly finished T7 in his second Masters last week. On his debut here last year, he hit a field-low 63 in the first round and finished T3. This is no small feat given the competition and course.
Young will start winning a lot of tournaments very soon because he’s just that good. What better time than this weekend when we’ve got a few bucks on him?
JustinThomas +2500 at FOX bet
It feels like deja vu. Last year Spieth missed the cut at the Masters and went on to win the RBC Heritage. Thomas missed the cut last week, and… you see what I’m getting at.
Thomas had an epic meltdown at Augusta, which is the only reason you get a golfer of his caliber at 25-1. Make sure he’s extra motivated after last week’s debacle.
Timeliness aside, he’s pretty good at this golf game. Thomas has gained approach shots in five of his last seven starts, finishing here in 2015 T11 and 2020 T8.
His iron game and steely focus should help him play well into Sunday. At +2500 Thomas is an autoplay for me.
Matt Fitzpatrick +3000 at FOX bet
Fitzpatrick has finished in the top 15 in three of his last five appearances at Harbor Town, and that’s it one of his favorite courses. I love little treats like this because no matter what level you play golf at, you play more confidently on the courses you love.
If you’ve watched the Netflix documentary Full swing, you know that Fitzpatrick relies on analytics to give himself an edge in every tournament. This is an event where his on-track precision and resulting data collection will keep him in the running.
Shane Lowry +3000 at FOX bet
Lowry is a great ball forward and comes into this tournament in great form. Last week he hit 50/56 fairways (89.29%). If you filter the data by just his last five starts, he has finished in the top 10% of the field in SG:T2G in four of those last five starts.
Lowry’s course history in Harbor Town is great and has been in the top 10 for three of the last four years. Love it at this price point.
long shots
if you follow me Twitter, you know, I love betting on long shots. It’s just exciting to hold a lottery ticket deep into Sunday. It also gives you multiple hedging options if you want to eliminate some of your risks.
That being said, here are two guys that are definitely worth throwing some pizza money at:
Si Woo Kim +6000 at FOX bet
Again this week, the approach game will be the name of the game. If you dig even deeper, playing 150-200 yards will be key to this week’s success where Kim made money. For the past three months, he has ranked ninth in 150–175 yards and 10th in 175–200 yards.
He tied second here in 2018 and is in a great position to bounce back. That number will be significantly shorter by the end of Thursday.
JustinRose +6500 at FOX bet
Last year he tied for 14th, has played well this year (won AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am) and his skills match the course.
This bet is also a numbers game because I see it approaching 50-1 before the tournament starts.
You can do a lot worse than make Rose a few bucks less to win this thing 65-1.
Just missed: JT Poston
