Kyrie Irving will change his jersey number when he re-signs with the Mavericks

Kyrie Irving has yet to commit to a team for the upcoming NBA season, but should he return to Dallas he will wear a new number.

Irving wore the number 2 last season after being sent from Brooklyn to Dallas before the trade deadline in February. It’s the same number he wore during his first six seasons in the league with Cleveland (2011–17).

Should he decide to re-sign with Dallas, Irving will go forward wearing the number 11 – a number he wore at both Boston (2017-19) and Brooklyn (2019-23). Dallas’ first pick in the latest draft, center Dereck Lively II, will wear the No. 2 next season.

The No. 11 jersey was previously worn by Mavs guard Tim Hardaway Jr., who will wear the No. 10 when he returns to Dallas.

The eight-time All-Star is currently an unrestricted free agent and will likely demand the maximum amount of money from potential suitors. Dallas has already expressed its desire to keep Irving, who has so far remained silent about his intentions.

Perhaps this new numerical revelation could be an omen for the future.

Irving averaged 27.0 points on 51% shots, 6.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game in 20 appearances for Dallas last season with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3:1. After Irving joined the team, the Mavs went to a 10-18 record and fell from fourth place in the Western Conference standings, missing the playoffs overall (Dallas was 8-12 in the games Irving played) .
