A player has won an event on the European Tour for the first time.
Linn Grant has also made history in amazing style.
The 22-year-old Swede obliterated a field of men’s and women’s golfers in Sunday’s Scandinavian Mixed Event, winning by nine shots after an 8-under 64 in the final round at Halmstad Golf Club.
Remarkably, she finished 14 strokes ahead of second-best woman, Gabriella Cowley, who tied for 15th.
Grant started the day with a two-stroke lead and shagged five of her first six holes, demonstrating the brilliant power and calm temper she’s displayed all week in southern Sweden.
She went first by nine shots after birdie on the par 5 11th hole and made eight total birdies, ending a bogey-free weekend and week of her golfing life.
It is the second edition of a tournament that started with 78 men and 78 women in the field playing for a prize fund and trophy on the same course – albeit from different tees.
Grant’s grandfather James was a Scottish professional golfer who emigrated to Helsingborg in Sweden from Inverness in northern Scotland. Her father John also played on the Swedish Golf Tour and has seven victories on the Swedish Senior Tour.
Grant turned pro last year and won events on the Ladies European Tour in March and May, making her a rising star. In an interview while seated in the top nine, Grant said that after those two wins, she felt reassured as she headed into the biggest lap of her life.
Her boyfriend Pontus was her caddie this week and her mum was on the course and among those cheering on Grant on every green on a day of changeable weather.
Swedish grandmaster Henrik Stenson, who co-hosted the event with his compatriot Annika Sorenstam, shot 70 and tied for second place with Marc Warren (65).
The golf world reacted to Grant’s performance.
