The Open Championship 2022 odds: British Open best bets, Tiger Woods

Most of the world’s best golfers travel to St Andrews Old Course in Scotland for the 150th Open Championship, also known as the British Open. The Royal & Ancient Golf Club will host the elite golfers with the first round on Thursday.

All eyes will be on Tiger Woods as he seeks his fourth Open title. If successful, Woods would pick up the third most Open Championship titles in history.

TIED TOGETHER: Ways to bet on Tiger Woods at The Open Championship

Tiger plans to hit St Andrews and nobody generates more golfing action from bettors than Tiger, as BetMGM data analyst John Ewing explains in his tweet. Any sportsbook will be in a similar position, with Tiger posing a great threat of winning it all.

Tiger is targeting his 16th Major win, which would put him two behind all-time leader Jack Nicklaus. He has won 82 times on the PGA Tour, the most in Sam Snead history.

Dylan Brossman, senior manager of trading operations at FOX Bet, said he expects Tiger to make it through the weekend but won’t pose a serious challenge.

“I expect Tiger to perform similarly, if not slightly better than April’s Masters,” Brossman said. “Two respectable laps to get him into the weekend but an aging body that won’t be able to keep up next Sunday.”

If not tigers, then who? Brossman likes a local golfer’s chances of hoisting the Claret Jug.

Born in Southport, England, Tommy Fleetwood has won five times on the European Tour and finished second at two majors, the 2018 US Open and the 2019 Open Championship.

“Fleetwood got off a T4 at the Scottish Open last week and has already had success at The Open, finishing second in 2019,” said Brossman. “Fleetwood is yet to win on the PGA Tour – winning the 150th Open at St Andrews would be a storybook breakthrough for the Englishman.”

For bettors looking for golfers with higher odds of finishing in the top 10 or 20, Brossman suggests Tony Finau (3rd at the 2019 Open) and Max Homa (four-time PGA Tour winner).

“Finau is hitting wide from the tee which should give him plenty of eagle opportunities if conditions remain stable,” said Brossman. “Keep an eye out for Finau, who’s in the running if he can pot a few putts.

“Homa had a solid performance at the Scottish Open last week (tie 16th) and has jumped up to 19th in the official world golf rankings. I expect Max and Tiger to stay loose and get solid scores on Thursday and Friday.”

There are several compelling storylines in The Open Championship:

Four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy is the pre-tournament betting favorite at +1000. He won the Open in 2014, capping a string of his three major titles in a little over three years.

Rising star Collin Morikawa, 25, won last year’s event for his second career major. Morikawa is currently at +2500 to win the event.

Matthew Fitzpatrick, 27, returns to Britain a hero (he was born in Sheffield), fresh off his first major win at the US Open in June. Fitzpatrick won the 2012 Boys Amateur Championship at Notts Golf Club in Nottinghamshire, England. He is listed at +1800 to win.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has had a remarkable year. Scheffler won the Masters in April for his first major, then fourth place at the PGA Championship and second place at the US Open. If you think Scheffler can keep his hot game going, he might be worth a try at +1800.

Research by FOX Sports shows that Louis Oosthuizen was the Open winner with the longest pre-tournament odds (since 1984) in 2010 (+20,000).

Since 1984 there have been four Open winners who were not listed with individual odds (listed as part of the ‘field’) before the tournament: John Daly 1995 (+1000 as field), Paul Lawrie 1999 (+350 as field), Ben Curtis 2003 (+1500 as field) and Todd Hamilton 2004 (+400 as field).

Since 2009, five Open winners had odds of +8000 or higher before the opening round: Shane Lowry 2019 (+8000), Zach Johnson 2015 (+8000), Darren Clarke 2011 (+15,000), Oosthuizen 2010 (+20,000) and Stewart Cink in 2009 (+12,500).
