It happened that way, but not the way he wanted it. A low blow with an upset stomach that shattered Lineker’s cup rendered him unable to continue and the match was not a contest.
It was a disappointing end to a highly anticipated fight – and one that added even more fuel to an already bitter rivalry, one with real bad blood and scores to be settled.
Andrade believes the three and a half rounds the two circled together will have had a lasting effect on his opponent and offers a psychological advantage when it comes to this weekend’s matchup at ONE Fight Night 7 in Bangkok.
“I think the fact that I got very close to the fight, that he was badly injured in the fight and that I defended all his attempts on the ground makes a difference in the psychological factor,” Andrade said. “He knows I’m better than him. His chance to win this fight is if something extraordinary happens. But we know I’m the best athlete, this is my moment and I will be the champion.”
There was a lot of attention to Lineker’s weight leading up to the first fight, Andrade doesn’t expect that to be an issue this time – and plans to end things early when they finally meet again.
“He will definitely be more vigilant with this weight issue. Nobody likes to be on time and doesn’t make weight. Nobody wants to appear unprofessional. So I think he’ll be aware of his weight so it doesn’t happen again.
“It doesn’t bother you at all. I’m not worried about that. If he doesn’t gain weight again, we’ll still fight and I’ll KO him.
“This fight will end in a maximum of two rounds. And it will definitely end up knocking John Lineker out again.”
