US Open 2022: Matt Fitzpatrick wants to win

Golf

English people Matt Fitzpatrick won that US Open won his first major on the same course where he had won the US amateur title nine years earlier.

Fitzpatrick posted a 2-under 68 at The Country Club, finishing the tournament with a 6-under 274, beating Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler by one.

Fitzpatrick led with a shot and hooked his drive into a bunker to the left of the fairway on the No. 18. But he hit the middle of the green and double-putted from 18 feet for par. Zatoris had a 14-foot birdie putt to tie but missed by a fraction.

This was the second consecutive major finish for Zatoris, who lost to Justin Thomas in a playoff at the PGA Championship last month. It was Zulatoris’ sixth top-10 finish in seven majors since making his major debut with Winged Foot at the 2020 US Open.

Fitzpatrick hit 17 greens normally. He is the first Englishman to win the US Open since Justin Rose at the Merion in 2013, the same year Fitzpatrick won the US Amateur at The Country Club.

He is the only player besides Jack Nicklaus to have won both the US Open and the amateur on the same course. Nicklaus won Pebble Beach in 1961 and 1972.
